SOUTHERN MARKETS

By Telegraph—Frens Association Christchurch, March U. With tho exception of .1 south-west squall on Wednesday, which brought about a quarter of an inch'of rain, the weather has been'fine during the week for the harvest mid thrashing work. There is practically i;o business passing in wheat so far as- the local mille-vs are concerned, and only <1 small quantity of pearl has been required by them. Very heavy yields of \yheat continue to be recorded, and the official estimate of the crop is bound to bo vcij largely exceeded. Tho oats market is in ■ a very unsettled nud unsatisfactory state at, present. Tho" heavy fpeculation that has ' been indulged in is practically on paper, as beyond the sales that took place in the early part of the season whon oats wore actually ' wanted there has been scarcely nny business done between growers and their clients. The market so far as nominal quotations are concerned is weaker, but nt the same time there are no sellers among the growers who are preparing to store in preference to accepting the low rates quoted. Nominal quotations for A grade Gartons aro Bs. 6d., B grade 3s. to 3s. 3d., Duns 3s. 3d. to 3s. 4d., Algerians 2s. 9d. to 35., Danish 35., at country stations. The price of oatsheaf chaff is indefinite in view of the fact that the actual -price of oats is not fixed, but it is nominally (iiiotedi'at .£4 10a. ft country stations. The prico of oatmeal has not. yet been altered; hud will remain at the figure that has 'beon ruling for some time ljntil tho oats market fettles down, potatoes for prompt delivery lire a little easier, the quotation being now =£5 ss. at country stations. A few more are now. being 3ug, but there is not much inquiry at present. The cocksfoot market shows signs of steadying. Prices have recovered about 3d- to Id. per lb., mid seed is now quoted at 6id. to 71d. per lb.
