HIDE AND TALLOW SALES
The fortnightly sales of hides and tallow were held yesterday by tho various brokora:— Messrs. Dalgety and Co. report that they submitted a, [small catalogue to the usual attendance of buyers. Owing to the restrictions on the export of bides, prices declined to the level of tho Government schedule. Messrs. Levin and Co. report:—"Under the embargo all hides and calfskins have to' bo offered at specified prices to' tho tanners of New Zealand. If tho.tanners do not require them the owners may sell to tho highest bidder, and the hides may be oiDortcd to any British market. Tho pricoa at »hich the tanners have the option of purchase are- those which nere payable by the Imperial Government under the requisition scheme when it vras in operation. Tho representatives of the New Zealand tanners appointed by the ! . Board of Trade, in addition to local exporters, were present, and offerings met with keen demand at Government ilxed prices, and all lots were sold to either tanners or exporters.' Buyers being fully stocked will not operate in tallojv until market conditions become more defined, oonseauently parcels offered met with no competition Whatever, and practically nil catalogues wore passed without eliciting a bid. We fear that the future of the market for some littlo time will show a decidedly easier tendency." Messrs. Murray, Roberts, and Co. advise that they offered a' catalogue of TO hides and calfsktnß. Tho recent embargo on shipment and limitation of prices under Government proclamation deterred exportora from operating' to any extent, and bidding was practically confined to representatives. The firm state that they catalogued some lines of superior conditioned hides, some of which reached the gazotted values, other lots being passed In at prices below these rates. Thero w«b a little revival of inquiry for tallow, but at prices considerably below late \alues, most of the lots being paased in. The New Zealand Farmers' Co-opcrativo Distributing Co.. Ltd., report a very modorato inquiry. Competition was somewhat restricted, and values ruled for hides Id. to 2d. per. lb. lower, in consequence of tho maximum prices now placcd by tho Government on any hides required by tannors. before exporters are allowed to ship. Calfskins generally wore lower Id. to 2d. per lb., but a few lines changed hands above tho Government maximum of 19d. per lb. Tho Wairtirapit Farmers' Co-operative
Association, Ltd., in which is incorporated the United Formers' Co-operative Association. report: "Tliis was the first snlo held under tho schedule published in the Now Zealand Gazette of March 6 fixing prices, and thoro was a fair attendance of buyers.
