WAIRARAPA MEETING

HYDRUS WINS BIG EVENT. By Teloeraph.-T-Special Correspordent. The Wairarapa Meeting concluded in ) fine weather. A heavy gr.lo blew all day, and made matters uncomfortable. Hydrus appeared to be a bit lucky to dofeat Nystad in the big race, and in the open sprint Chimera w.pn very decisively. The amount handled by the totalisator was ,£15,739, making a total for tho meeting' of. iEM.B32. . . There were only five starters in the Hack Welter Handicap, and favouritism rested with Manu and Momac, who were preferred in tlmt order; Manu and Sunburst were together to tho straight entrance, whero" Momac shot through on the fonce, but when she looked to have tho .raco won Vascovia and Imtv ribbon both put in challenges, and the former won by /a length, with Imaribbon clear of Momac. Manu was close up. Another field of live faced tho starter in the Russoll Handioap, Thoy were all fancied, and-Chimera, tho absolute favourite,.gave a good return. She was (he quickest to begin, but Trentham Rose 600 ii headed her, and carried on tho running till well down the straight. Tlion Chimera shot out, and soon placed tho position beyond doubt. Her rider was pulling her np before the post was reached. Trentliam Ease wr/i second and Piriform a poor third. Ladj Black was lame on returning to tho birdcage. Multaine and Nystad were the best backed in tho Autumn' Handicap, Loyal 1 Arch, Comment, Galore, and Momac being withdrawn. In the preliminary, several of. tho runners moved short, particularly Form Un and Ladify. At the start. Goldstream made play, and ho led 'the iiflUUuntil three furlongs from home. Then Hydrus and Form Hp took onargc, and tho former was in charge entering tho straight. Over the last half-furlong Nystad put in a great run, but he could not reach Hydras, who won by a head. Multaine, who was tailed off for five furlongs, also finished well' in third place, i Ladify was next. There was another small field in tho . Ruamahanga Hack Handicap, only tlireo horses facing the starter. Red Signal appeared to 'be a certainty, but the publio i allowed he.r to pay p. falso price. Tuti- ! oorn led Zabism and'the favourite into - tho straight, W at • the distance the < top weight got through on the fence and 1 won easily. Zabism and Tuticom were . both;-ridden out for second place, and ' the tnnre. got tho position by a head. The KembP.ll bracket was better back- 1 ed than the Riddiford bracket for the ! Juvenile Handicap, and after a great ! , race Miss Gold beat- Chaeronia by a I • head.' Hyades was quickest to begi'a, : and led Chaeronia into the straight- . . : Here the two favourites went away, and ! both were "hard"'ridden i over' the last : furlong, victory resting with the top I - weight. Hyades was a poor, third. The Rawiri .Welter Handicap had the : biggest field of the day, and the general ! ; opinion was tliat it was the most open I ;• event, but the publio made Kiltess fav- : ourite, and she ran home an easy winner. Altercation led Momac and Hs- ) drus for half the journey, but-across the bottom Gold Soult took charge. Ho was in trouble a furlong, from home, where Kiltess ran to the front,, and, i though challenged by Loyal Arch, she • won.comfortably. Altercation was a poor third. Of the four starters in the Camp Hack i Handicap only Battle Array and Penury Rose were fancied, and .odds wore laid on the firsti horse. Deeley had him iji a • good position the whole way,. and after ' allowing Royal Battery to. accompany him 'to the turn the.fovouritq was then ! .sent along, and won by three lengths i from Penury Rose. Rienzi was a poor 1 third. . . _ j ' • In tie concluding event Rebekah was ; made tho hottest order of the meeting, : and with S. Reid in the saddle she ens- ■ ily landed tho odds' laid on her. Sho jumped out in front, and was not headed on the journey. Thore is no doubt : about her, being a really smart hack, and she is sure to hold her own in open company.
