HUTT AND PETONE NEWS

A bazaar for tho jurpose of raising funds tor the building of technical class rooms at Lower Ilutt was held in tho Lower Hutt Drill Hall yesterday. Mr. Baldwin, chairman of the building committee, gave tho history of the effort made to establish technical classes at Lowoi Hutt. So successful was tlio effort that it was now necessary to provide increased accommodation for the classes. Olio and n Uail acres of hind in Woburn Road had l.'eeu givon by Mr. Hiddiford. Tho land was worth .£BSO. The Government gave a grant of X 250, and promised another ,t'3oo conditional on the Hutt residents contributing a similar sum. Two hundred pounds were already in hand, and tho bawiiir was being held lo assist in getting the remaining ,£IOO. Once they had tho ,£3OO they would be able fo ask tho Department to proceed with the building of the class rooms. Ho congratulated" the ladies on their labour, and hoped tho bazaar would be a l'.uge success. He would ask Mr. Rishworth, on behalf of tho Bazaar Committee, to declare tho bazatir open. Sir. 11. .I'. Rishworth, Mayor of Lower Hutt, apologised for the alisence of tho Minister of. Education, who had fo remain in town on account of the troops arriving by the Hororafn. Apologies were also received from tho Hon. T. M. Wilford and Mr. T. Forsyth, chairman qf tho Education Board. In declaring tho bazaar open, 3lr. Rishworth said that tlioy all realised the great need for more effective education. About two years ago tlio Minister of Education had sent word that it was intended to close the Hutt and Potono District High Schools, and strong protests, had been made to the Minister, and it had been decided that the classes should not bo closed until a proper secondary higk school was established at the Lower Hutt. They were now working hard to get. a proper High School, and when the Director of Education, Minister of Education, and chairman of Education Board visited tlio Lower Hutt they would come, to some reasonable solution of tho trouble, and make provision for the establishment of a High School proper. There were now sdme sixty or more pupils atfending tho night classes, and unless they got better accommodation they would not be able to cope with the demand. The Eastern Hutt School had a roll number of 40fi, and it was only eight years since the school was started, and already additional class rooms had been added. At the District High School tho accommodation wc.s overtaxed, three classes had over 70 scholars in them, and it was not fair to teachers and scholars, especially during this sultry weather. He had much pleasure in declaring the b.v/.aar open, and hoped it would nrove a success, The stall-holders " ere Fancy, Mesdames Forsyth, Davidson, Allan.
