NEW ZEALAND BISLEY
j v ypjTERDAY'S, MATCHES ; i J. KING LEADING FOR THE BELT ■ , KING'S FIFTY FIRE OFF TO-DAY A tricky wind and. a vnriable light ■made shooting 'somewhat patchy at Trentham yesterday, when the annual jyize meeting of the Dominion -Killo Association was continued. Many conine{itors who did'well the previous day, fell away yesterday, and the chances of some men of getting into the aggregate for the King's Prize were spoiled. At the outset-the wind was blowing straight • down the range', but later on;it shifted a point or two to the left r6ar, and upset a good many calculations.. The first match of the day was the Canterbury Hatch, ten shots at GflO-yards, Bisley targets being used. This was won by' Rifleman W. D. Paterson, of Kai--1 tangata, a -tyro, , who made a score of 47. out of a possible 50. His first shot ,was a bull's-eye, which was followed by a magpie. . Then came two more "bullies" and an outer, the remaining five shots all being bull's-eyes. Paterson's finish was & very fine: one, and he had the hardest of bad luck in not getting the- possible. ' Several other good scores were made in tho match, notably those of Rifleman R. M. Hathaway (Te Kuiti), Lieutenant V. Hudson. (P. and T. Engineers), and Rifleman Jarvis (Taradale), and G. Purser who each obtained 45. Rifleman R. J. King (Opaki) and F. H. James (Okawa), two ex-cham-pions, made '44 'and 41 respectively, Lieu'i . tenant W. Duncan, of'AVestport, who annexed the championship in 1909, and who has been shooting pretty well during the. meetingj made'a very poor showing during the match; and was puzzled to know the reason why. ' His elevation . seemed to be all right, but he fouud that he had to make an extraordinarily wide margin for windage- Suddenly he was 6truck with the idea of, examining his foresight, when he was, considerably astounded to find iliht it had shifted out. cf place'. The foresight is merely wedged into position on its base, and in the present instance it had become loosened ~ ana moved fully a 16th of an inch to. i the right of the barrel. , 'i The Nelson Match, the- conditions of which wero similar to those in the' Canterbury Match, was won by Lieutenant ! G.'B. Williamson, of th& Post and Telegraph Engineers, who scored 49 out of'so. The whole of his shots were bull's-eyes, with the exception of the fifth, which •was an inner, just on the edge of the bull, The scores of several ex-champions in tho match were as follow.—'R. J. King (Opaki), 45; G. Halliday (Karori), - 42 (counted out); IV H. James (Okawa), 42 ■' {counted out); J. W. Milroy (Nelson), 40; Colonel E. R. Smith (Otago), 39; G. Hyde (Opaki), 38; Lieutenant W.- Duncan ■ (AVestport), 37; and Captain R. "M. Irvine (Nelson), 30. The present holder of the- Belt, Lieutenant W. N. Maaofield, made 34. R, J, King Wins Carbine Cup, The'higher aggregate scorer at the 300, 500, and 600 yards ranges in the Belt series waa Rifleman R. J. King, of Opaki, the champion of 1003, who' puit on 402 al-' together at the three'distances. Rifleman King, who'is. a formidable shot to meet, and who is at the top of the list for the King's Fifty, thus becomes the' winner of the Trentham - Aggregate and the holder of the Carbine Cup. Rifleman P. Morgan, of Christchurch, was runner-up with 398, and Rifleman S'. Elliott, of Akarana, third with a score. of 396. _ Many marksmen Competing at the meeting have complained of trouble .with their rifles, due to nickling of the bar- ' a-els. The rifle used is the 1914 pattern .303 Lee-Enfield, which differs somewhat . in construction from the long barrel, and , again from the short rifle. The breech mechanism and the back sight is not the same, and the foresight is protected on either side by two lugs. These lugs project fronfajjand, which is so. firmly se- ' cured to the "barrel that it-bears tho appearance of having been shrunken on. In the older rifles the barrel would expand near the" muzzle when it became heated after a few shots had been-fired, Jmt in the weapon now in-, use, owing to the tightness of tho sight hand, no sucli expansion appears to be possible. Owing to war conditions, the nickel of which , tho envelope of the'leaden bullet is made is not so hard, as it used to be, and. the consequence is that it strips and becomes set in the especially near the muzzle, where the sight'protector band surrounds the barrel. This nickling interferes seriously - with the accuracy of the shooting as it tends to -block the bore. To! remove it is no easy task with the ordinary cleaning appliances used by marksmen, but if it is not extracted the results aro often likely to be of an -unpleasant nature. During the course ofthe AVestland Match, Riflemaii T. Frazer, of Kaitaagata, received a very sudden ■surprise through the barrel.of his rifle bursting. : The barrel spread out like a mushroom for about half of its length, and the. wooden stock was splintered. Rifleman. Frazer, >who is a rifle shot of fairly long experience, was not injured, but he made no secret of the fact that ,he was "startled a bit." The exact .cans® of the mishap is not defined, but it is assumed by Experts, who examined the rifle that the nickel envelope of a bullet stuck in the bare near tho muzzle r i through becoming detached from the i <■ lead core, and that when the next shot Was fired the pressure in the barrel was bo great that it burst. ■ ' ' • Referenco to tho rifles was made by Colonel Collins, chief executive officer, when the men assembled at tho squadding yesterday afternoon, before going ~to /the firing mounds. He pointed out that tho rifle was Dot the kind of weapon which rifle club men wanted, and said he knew that the meetings -would be larger in tho futuro if better ones we(p obtained: Riflemen preferred to have their-own rifles, and he) trusted that by the time tho next championship meeting was held a better class of weapon would lie obtainable. At the same time he wished to thank the competitors for the wholehearted manner in which-they had assjsted him at the meeting, notwithstanding the defects and difficulties which hud been manifested, and lie was sure-that at next year's gathering their troubles .would not bo nearly so great. At the conclusion of his remarks, tilecolonel was loudly cheered. Rifleman C. J. Nix, of Fentherston. won the .Inst long-rapge competition, the Otago Match. 800 yards, with the excellent total of 49 out of a possible 59. This match was the last of the Belt series. ' ' Rifleman Nix had a similar experience to that of Lieutenant G. B. Williamson in (he, previous Nelson Match, as all his shots were bull's-eyes, with the exception of the fifth, which was an inner. Rifleman P. C, Hamilton, of Wanganui, was second in the match with 48, Rifleman R. A. Wilson being third with 47. Of the ex-champions, D. Roots, of Patea, the Bolt winner of 1911, ."hot best, his score being 46. • R. J. King (Opaki) made 44. and Captain R. At. Irvine (Nelson) and Lieutenant W. "Duncan (Westport) each scored 43. The Service Championship was : fired yesterday afternoon, the distances being--200. -500, and 600 yards, and' Rifleman AV. .T. Morgan, of the Akarana Club, a wellknown Auckland shot, who has been shooting at Trentham for 'many years, took fiTst Drize with a score of 269. -.Tljo scores made in this match were added lo those made in the four service matches, and Rifleman Morgan being the highest aggregate scorer he was also awarded the Kvrioeh Cup. and Rifleman W. G. Fellingham; of the Wellington Suburbs Club, was runner-up, being 14 points behind the winner. Final Matches To-day. The meeting will be brought to a conclusion to-day, when (lie Champion Team Match and the King's Prize Mutch will be fired. Tho last-mentioned contest will take place at 3 run. on- the Sommerville range, the- fifty highest aggregato scorers in all the matches of the B series, with the exception of Mm Opening Match, .participating. In former years this match .was fired at 1000 yards, but the distance lias now been rc- '' jluced to 800 yards, each man'firing, len Shots. The highest grand aggregate scorer will .become Hie winner of the King's Prize and . the • holder of the .-'"Ballinger" Champion Rifle Belt for 1919. H« will also receive cv eold medal, presented
by the Minister of Defence, the gold badge of the Dominion Rifle Association, and a, cash prizo of =£25. Rifleman R. J.King, of Opaki, is at present in the lead in the competition for the Belt. Under the conditions governing the contest for the Belt, it is impossible for tho muchcoveted prizo to bo won outright. Rifleman George Hyde, of the Opaki Club, has won it on two occasions, tho first in 1902, and.the, second in 1908. The present holder is Lieutenant AV. N. Masefield, 12th. (Nelson) Regiment, who secured it at the last meeting of the association, held in February, 1914, when lie was Shooting as a member of tho Sounds Rifle Club.
