... — » : EXCESS dP APPLICANTS. The Minister, of Public Health (Hon. G. W. Russell) stated yesterday that abont ninety applications had been received for the fifty war bursaries recently offered by tho War Punds Council. These bursaries are to enable the success-. ful applicants to take any university course, including law and medicine. Tho) question of dealing with the anplica- j tions, said the Minister, was now under | consideration. The necessary reports , had been obtained from the Defence Department'. and the Education Department with' regard to each of the candidates, and a further statement would be made within a few days. "The very lnrgo number of applications received," said the Minister, "justifies me, I think, in expressing tlvo hope that the patriotic societies of the Dominion will bo prepared to assist in tho work that has been started by the War Funds Council. I hesitate to make direct application to these bodies, but I would like to say that if any of them are prepared to indicate their willingness to assist in the matter, the War Funds Council will be. very pleased to confer with them in order that if possible the whole of the suitable applicants for bursaries maybe assisted."' The Minister added that the first fifty applicants for bursaries were distributed over tho four military districts as follow:—Wellington, 14; Otago, 21; Canterbury, 9; Auckland, 6. He hoped to have particulars of the othsr applications the next day.'
