Y.M.C.A; WAR WORK
RETURN OF THE SUPERVISING • SECRETARY. 3y Telegraplf— Press Association. Auckland, March 13. The supervising secretary of the New Zealand Y.M.C.A. work in France and England (Mr. George W. W. B. Hughes, of Dunedin) has returned fco Auckland by the Niagara. Speaking generally of the war work of the New- Zealand Association, Ml - . Hughes said the association might fairly claim to have dono its work. "Folks hare been very kind," he said, "particularly business firms, who have always helped us out of difficulties when wo went short of supplies. Recently we have been associated with the military authorities' education scheme for soldiers, and in this connection we have been working a school at Hornchurch, the largest of its kind, and probably the best equipped in England. .In connection with the trench comforts scheme wo had established canteens in the forward areas from which the profits were entirely devoted to tho men themselves. In London wo have opened two largo liotols, which together witli the Shakespeare Hut give accommodation for over 800 men. In Paris, in co-operation wit.h the Australian and British Y.M.C.A.. wo opened time hotels where accommodation was safe and cheap." Mr. Hughes mentioned that immensely valuable work was being done in London by a body of New Zealand women, called the Women's International Street Patrol, of which Mrs. M'Hngh, an Auckland lady, was the head.
