STRIKE AT MEAT WORKS
HIGHER WAGE'S DEMANDED. By Telegraph—Press' Association Wairoa, March 13. The chamber hands, numbering 23, at ' the Wairoa Meat Works, struck yesterday' morning for an increase in wages. The ■ men have been receiving Is. 61-d. per , hour with ljd. per hour war bonus \ added, plus 5 per cent, of the total wages. • Certain men received" lid. per hour in , addition. The men now ask for 2s. per hour, plus 5 per cent, added to the total wages. The men held a conference with the manager of the works, but no agreement Was come to. The other departments are still keeping going, but the men remain out. Slaughtering ceased at 3 o'clock yesterday. The manager states that the existing award expires on March 31, and lie considers it premature to ask for different conditions until then. The company is prepared to accept a revision of the present sca.le at the end of March. A meeting of the men was held last night, when the company offered terms, which were refused. .. The office staff worked last night, and slaughtering is proceeding.
