' THE nOUSIXG PROBLEM. 11l reply to a resolution passed'by (lie Petone Political Association, urging the Government to bring forward, at tho earliest possible dato ft better scheme for housing the people, the Hon. W. .11. Hemes, Minister of Labour, slated that it was the intention of the Government as eoou as the', cost'of bulldiug settles down somewhat, to: proceed with the erection of .workers' dwellings in considerable numbers,, and the Workers' Dwell ing« Board had made preparations to commence, building operations nt an early date. -The desirability of eroding these dwellings was fully appreciated, not only in the interests of the applicant workers themselves, but also on account of (lie necessity of improving housing conditi'ons generally. A number of application forms had been recently sent to the town clerk, Petone, together with somo explanatory pamphlets 'respecting the procedure to be followed under the Workers' Dwellings Act, to enable workors desiring to have dwellings ferectcd to fill in the forms arid forward- them to the Inborn- Department.'- In regard to suggestion that the Government should run heir own sawmills, brick kilns,- and other building industries, the Workers' Dwellings Board had been making inquiries with a view to purchasing building materials direct in order to cheapen tho ns far ns possible. - At the last- meeting of the Petone Group Protestant Political Association a letter was received-from tlm Acting Minister of labour, the-Eon. W. If. Herries,' inviting members to the Town-planning Conference to be held in Wellington during May. Mr. J. Pipro and Mr. W. B. Gough. were appointed to attend ant] give the views of the association on the matter. , .- ■ < • •A meeting of the Petmie Ratonayci's' Association was held in 'Jones's Hall.on Tuesday evening. -Mv.- G. T,-London providing. Suggestions; were made - as to nominating members of, the association for candidature at the nest, iminieioa'i elections. Members of the' association were invited to come forward, and tho help nrwl support of tho association v.-as promised in their eleelion. A niftin" wan arranged for at Koro' Koro. . It- is probable that the-names of those nominated with -the approval of the. associa- ■ hon will "be made known- at an enrlv date., •; ' ■ Mr;. Boyd has been elected hon. secretary of the Petone group of the. Protestant Political Association, vice Mr. W B Gough, who has retired.
