NEW ZEALAND EISLEY

YESTERDAY'S SHOOTING START MADE WITH BELT SERIES THE PRIZE LISTS With the exception of a wind which, nt times was very tricky, the annual prize meeting of the Dominion liifle Association was continued at Trentham in line weather yesterday, and in the afternoon a start was made with the matches which count for the Belt Championship. The morning was devoted to the Opening Match of tho B series, seven tliots at 300, 500, and 000 yards, ami the winner was Rifleman P. Morgan, of Cliristchurch, ivho made a score of 03 out of a possiblo 105. Rifleman It- J. King, of Opaki, a former Belt champion, and P. Browne, of Waihi, were second and third respectively, with a score of 92 each. The scores made in this match do not count for the Belt, as the object of the shoot is to give competitors an opportunity of, "getting their eyes in." When the competitors assembled at tho squadding posts in the morning, before? going down to the Sommerville and Saddon ranges to fire off the Opening Match, Colonel R. J. Collins, Hie chief executive officer, announced that he had received telegrams from the Governor- • General and the Minister of Defence (Hon. Sir James Allen) congratulating him on the fact that the meeting had been opened successfully, and trusting that the gathering would be thoroughly enjoyable. Colonel Collins.also mentioned that a Consolation Match had been arranged for those men who had not been successful in getting into the prize lists. The, match would be fired either on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, and tho conditions would be. announced later. Prizes to the value of £75 would, be distributed. and there would be no entrance fee. (Cheers.} One more match of the A series—the "Running Man," or to give it its technical name, the Quick March Matchremains to bo completed in order to finish the individual service matches. The "Running Man" competition may be completed to-day, when it will bs possible to make ready for the conclusion of the Service Championship. The] Quick March Match is rather interesting in its way. The target is the figure of a man in silhouette, coloured khaki, with an 8-inch bull's-eye invisible to. the firer, and seven shots are fired at a distance of 300 yards, while the target is moving across the competitor's front, a distance of about 100 yards, 50 yards each way, in th-s spacn of about 40 seconds. It is a very good test of markmanship, and the ease with which the target can be missed is remarkable! At least, many shots are of that opinion. The Service Championship is ojien to the fifty highest aggregate scorers in the service matches ( and probably will be decided either this afternoon or to-morrow morning. The conditions are five rounds .snap-shooting at 200 yards, a head target being exposed from the butts seven times tor four seconds each time, Jen rounds rapid at 500 yards, and five founds slow fire at 600 yards. The highest aggregate scorer in this match will receivo the Kynoch. Cup, as a well as a prize of £10 and a gold medal. At the present time, Sergeant F. W. Ching, R.N.Z.A., of Wellington, and llifleman J. E. Te Whaiti, of Greytown, are leading with a score of l.'is each, Riflemen W. J. Morgan, of Akarana, and J. H. .Tames, of Okawa, being second with 1J52 each, and Lieutenant W. Duncan, of Westport, and Rifleman J. Causley, of Thames, third with 151 each. After the conclusion of the Opening Match, the Wellington Match, the lirst of the Belt series was commenced. The conditions were, ten shots at 500 and 600 yards. A strong breeze, full of vagaries, having sprung up after lunch, firm" in this match was rendered somewhat difficult and vexatious. The match concluded late in the afternoon, and was won by Rifleman W. D. Cleaver, of Tahora, with a 6core of 89. Lieutenant A. J. Green, of Westport, and Rifleman A. J. Henderson, of Sounds, who each made 89 also, were awarded second and third place respectively as they did not finish up so well as Rifleman Cleaver at the 500 yards range. The latter put on -43, scoring 46 at the 600 yards distance. His two last shots at the 600 yards range were bull'seyes. Similar .'scores were made by Lieutenant Green at each range, but his ninth and tenth shots at tho longer range I were i and 5 respectively. Rifleman Henderson made 45 at 500 yards, and 44 at the next distance. / The fourth man was Rifleman George Halliday,,of the Karori Club, the Belt winner of 1910, who made 88. 1 The first match to be fired to-day will be the Auckland Match, ten shots at 300 yards and 500 'yards. This will be followed by the Westland Match, which will be fired over the 300, 500, and 600 yards ranges, seven shots at each distance. The highest aggregate scorer in the AVestland Match and the Opening Match, whioh was completed yesterday, will be awarded the CI Cup, donated by Joseph Nathan and Co.
