The steamer War Opal, at Auckland, is ono of tho most interesting ships that has yet visited these waters. The vebsel, from New York. IB on her maiden trip. Built towards the latter part of 1918, the War Opal is one of 600 standardised vessels of tho Imperial Government. Perhaps tho most interesting feature is her six Samson posts, which are painted war grey. When thore is danger from submarine attack. these posts can bo lowered on to cradles until they resemble twelve-inch guns and Jio with their "muzzles" pointing outwards. Even at close range tho Samson posts are doceptivc. and can easily bo mistakon for guns. The main mast stands bv itself, v/ith the short funnel close behind, 60 that with the Sam6on posts in place the vessel ; resembles a torpedo boat, which was the intention of the designers to mako the vossol resemble. She is fitted with watertight compartments, and is practically an unsmkablo Bhip. In the evolit of her being torpedoed, the vessel remains upright, and only tho explosion of torpedoes in different places can do any serious damage. In the event of tho engine-room being inaccessible, tho engines can be controlled from tho bridge, which is a new departure for vessels, und lias been introduced solely for war purposes. Tho discharge pipe was a problem that confronted tho Government for some time, but this difficulty liaß been overcomo by having the Oischaxgo pipe under water. This would considerably assist in tho event- of submarine attack, as tho vessel is more easily distinguishable ■with her discharge over the side. It has also j been shown that when a vessel has been torpedoed, many lives have been ldst through the boats being illlod from tho discharge while lowering ther; over the side. Her engines wero built by, John Dlokinson, of Sunderland, and are trlplo expansion reciprocating. Sho has ten furnaces and three boilers, -which are forced draught. The vessel is also fitted to carry bulk oil, and can carry up to MOO tons. Her grain rapacity is 11 COO tons. The War Opal will arrive at Wellington from New York, via Auckland, on Saturday morning. Messrs. W. M. Bannatyno end Co. are the inward atronls ai Wellington. She will, sail Oil Tuesday evening for Lyttclton and Port Chalmers. The Federal-Shire Line will there take her over after discharge for Homeward loading in New Zealand. The To Anau will discharge Auckland cargo at Wellington and Z»'ttclton early next week. At noon to-day, the Burma will sail for London. Tho sailing of tho Ruapchn for London has been postponed to Saturday at 11 A.m. The U.S. and A. Line's steamer Westlaud, laden with New York cargo, which is due at Wellington on Monday or Tuesday from Auckland, has 15C0 tons for this poi't. To-morrow wedk 6he will sail for Sydney. The steamer Oaloniie arrived yesterday with coal from Newcastle, and discharge will be started this morning. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises, that she will load in New Zealand for London. On Saturday the Eastern Canadian si earner Middlehnni Castlo will arrive at Wellington for discharge.. Early next week the Union Company s Navua will load at Wellington for Aucklnnd.
