"ANCONIA" DIP FRAUDS
"A DANGEROUS CRIMINAL." ■ By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, March 10. ' In tho case against John C Harrison, sentenced to 6ix years' imprisonment-for the "Anconia." din frauds, evidence was given that accused was convicted at Woollongoug for selling valueless spray for fruit trees, that he was fined for gaming, that he was now wanted for uttering forged notes, and that he was regarded ab a confidence man in Melbourne. A detective, who had twice raided accused's premises because of illegal gaming, admitted that he had largo sums to his credit, and that his,books were kept excellently, and that so far as ho (witness) knew, there had been no dishonesty over the gambling transactions. • x ' Mr. Justice Hosking said prisoner was •a dangerous criminal. His good points had been alluded to, but the good points in a' criminal enabled him tho better to impose on the public by getting its confidence. PETITION IN BANKRUPTCY. Auckland, March 10. John C. Harrison, of "Anconia" dip fame, was before tho Court this morning on a petition by a creditor to have him ndjudicated a bankrupt. Mr. Singer, for the defendant, said tuere were no assets and none in prospect. The petition was adjourned till Tuesday next. The police state that it is estimated that Harrison obtained by selling "Anconia" dip. and he obtained ;81000 credit in the North Island between December, 1917, and March, 1918.
