ON A TEMPERANCE LECTURER. By Tcleßraphir-Press Association. ■ Duncdin, March 10. A brutal assatfit was mads on Mr, John M'Cartney, temperance lecturer and organiser, at Roxburgh, about 8.30 on Saturday night. -[Mr. M'Cartney, who had been in the district for some days organising in the interests of the party, was proceeding to' the house of Mr. Michelle, about haJ3: a mile outside the town boundary, when within a quarter of a mile of the house he' was accosted, by a man came round behind. Without vrjirning, after muttering something abi'ut drink, the man attacked 'Mr. M'Caraney, who promptly closed with his assailant. Another man came on the scene suddenly, and Mr. M'Cartney was struck; on the head with a blunt instrument and rendered unconscious. When Mr.. M'Cartney recovered consciousness he *was lying on the side of the'road, and ieache'd Mr. Michelle's house in an exhausted condition. Cuts on his coat suggesil; that an attempt was made to stab Mi> M'Cartney, the left arm and side being pierced in several places. Mr. M'Cartney' is not seriously injured, though his left ithigh is bruised, but this is attributed toi, his being dragged along the road. B>, has no idea of the identity of his assailants.
