CHESS

The fourth round of the Wellington South Club's current championship tournev resulted as follows:—G. P. Anderson (present champion) won from Faulknor, I'urchns (ex-champion) from Clark, Welton from 1 H. J- Thompson, and Harper from Berry. Messrs. Anderson, Purchas, Welton. and Harper are leading, haying woa all .their games to date, lhree more rounds have to be decided, and there are also a few outstanding, games to be disposed of. A close finish is looked for. Messrs. Mulvey, Eno, Key. Braddock, Messrs. Laughton and Greig are lending- in the minor tourney. Messrs. Anderson, Welton, and A. Clark will probably represent the club in the teams tourney' that constitutes the major event at the rally to be held at Masterton during the Easter holidays. The- Ngaio Club's season was opened recently, when Mr. K. A. Wright, M.P., presented the prizes won in last year 3 tourney, a list of which has alr.eady been published, and also the brilliancy prize, which goes to I''. J. Brooker oil the award of the adjudicator (F. K. Ivelling). T.ie rest of the evening was devoted to simultaneous play by F. Iv. Kelling, who lost to Krooker and Prince, but managed to draw or win the remaining games. The Wellington Chess Club s "ladder, which has provided members with gootl match practice since it was introduced ill the 'nineties, is to bo run 011 a new system tlie coming season. At present each player lias a rung to himself, and those who wish to put ill challenges sometimes have to wait for weeks, or even months, while the two players above them are leisurely finishing a match. With a view to "speeding up," each rung will in future contain a group of players: thus the Class I players will be on rung 1, the second-class players 011 rung 2. and so on. Any player may challenge anyone on the next higher rung, suitable provision being made for the rights of the chib champion. This system lias worked we'll in Dunedin, and it is confidently expected to give satisfaction here also. The names of Messrs. Dnvics, Godtschalk and Leo have been bonded in for the Easter carnival at Masterton.
