COLTS y. VETERANS A DRAWN GAME Beautiful weather favoured the match at the Basin Reserve on Saturday between teams representing the Colts and the Veterans. There was a very fair attendance, and as a consequence the funds of the Returned Soldiers' Club should benefit considerably us the proceeds wero in aid of that institution. Players under 29 years of age were the Colts, the Veterans being composed of those who were over that age. The teams were as follow:—Colts: Baker (captain), Roberts, Schroeder, Iliddleslon, Lambort, Allardyce, M'Girr, Doneghue, Binnie, Dwyer, Harris. Veterans—Wilson (captain), Beeclfey, Aldersley, Dind, Middleton. Hutchings, Patrick, Tucker, Gate, Fenton, Smyrke. The game commenced at about half-past 11 and the Colts were the first to go to the wickets, Baker and Roberts opening the batting. The first-named put on 20, when he cumbed l.b.w. to Huutchings after a very cumbed l.b.w. to Fenton after a. very brief innings. After the dismissal of Roberts, Schroeder entered into partnership with Baker and was going strong, with 34 to his crodit, when he, was smartly caught by Becchey off Patrick. The best score of the side was compiled by M'Girr, who had the hardest of luck i in not reaching the century, for he fell a victim to Beechey, who caught him off Dind, after he had-played a splendid innings for 95. Beechey was also responsible for terminating the career of Doneghue, who made 50 before he was caught. Hiddleston had made 43, when he was caught by Wilson off Aldersley. Thanks to the Veterans' bowling being of a mediocre description, the Coits had things pretty well their own way, and they closed their innings shortly before 4 o'clock with the score at. 354.
Beechey and Aldersley opened for the Veterans, and both had the misfortune to be run out, the former after making 42 and the latter after putting on 22. A good all-round display of batting was given by Beechey, and he was unfortunate in being run out. Middleton was at the wickets for the longest period, and did a lot of useful hitting. During the course of his innings, which yielded 50 rung, he split two bats. His was a vigorous display, and he was warmly applauded when he returned to the pavilion, after being caught by Hiddleston off the latter's own ball. Great things were expected of Hutchings, but he had made onlv 6 when he was clean-bowled by Hiddleston. Patrick was run out when he had made 2, being the third veteran to succumb in this fashion.'" 7 ' Stumps were drawn at G p.m., consequently the Veterans did not finish their innings, and tha game endld in a draw. The two not-out men were Tucker and Gate, \f?io made 10 and 7 respectively. In about two hours the Veterans had scored 191 for the loss of six wickets.
