SOFT GOODS EMPLOYEES
UNION REREGISTERED,. Tho former registration of the 'Wellington Soft Goods Employees' Union has been cancelled, and the union has been reregistered, under the following title: The "Wellington Amalgamated Society of Shop Assistants in the Boot, Hardware, Stationery, Fancy Goods, Furniture, and Soft Goods Trades. This new registration will enable tho union to make claims on behalf of all shop assistants in the trades mentioned, and will bring the union into line with unions in Australia. A year or two ago tho Registrar of Industrial Unions refused to make such a registration as the above, and the legality of his refusal was the subject of an argument heard by His Honour Mr, .Tustico Stringer. His Honour held that it was permissible to register tho union as above, in order to provido for an extension of membership that would includo persons employed in all the retail trades specified. He stated that for tho purposes of the Act the work of retail assistants might be regarded as an industry, and that tliero was no objection io a union being formed to com* prise retail assistants in a variety of trades, workers in which had not already formed themselves into unions.
