FRIENDLY, SOCIETIES
<) LOOKING AHEAD. By Telegraph.—Prees Anfociatiou. ■ Christchurch, Fobruary 7. A banquet was held last night in connection with the annual meeting of the Grand Lodge of Canterbury Druids. The Governor-General (the Earl of Liverpool) was present, and in responding (o the toast of his health congratulated members of all friendly societies on the remarkable achievement in sending so many men to the war. Whilo all were glad at the conclusion of tho war, they must take counsel for future problems. He referred to the spirit of great unrest' throughout the world, and until it settled there wero bound to be difficulties ahead. He counselled a littlo tolerance and forbearance from those holding different views. The Hon. J. A. Hanan responded to the toast of "Parliament," and paid a tribute to the great work of friendly societies, whose -total funds in' 1917 exceeded two millions, or an average capital per member of nearly thirty pounds. Though it was feared by some that tho war expenditure would seriously affect the stability of the societies, the far-see-ing work carried out years ago by the society leaders had enabled these organisations to weather the crisis.
