QUARANTINE REGULATIONS

—: « .— MAYOR OF AUCKLAND PROTESTS. Br TelczraDh—Prers Association. Auckland, March 7, ■ Candid criticism of ;he regulations in connection with the quarantining of vessels arriving at this, port from abroad was uttered by the Mayor, Mr. ,T. 11. Gunson. His remarks were the outcome of the arrival of the I'ort Melbourne with returned troops, "1 think it is quite time that'some objection was made in the public interest against the absurd and useless restriction as to twenty-four hours' quarantine on clean ships,"' said Mr. Gunson'.'" "Everyone admits that there is need for the utmost precautionary measures, but common sense must be introduced. If a ship is clean, what earthly use is twenty-four hours'' quarantine, particularly when the vessel has been out three weeks from port and has been clean throughout that period? If a ship has sickness on board one -may with equal reason ask what use is twentyfour .hours' quarantine. Under the latter conditions a ship ought to go to quarantine for a well-recognised period. In the interests of soldiers returning by the Panama route, of yliom there are over a thousand on some ships, it is quite time that unnecessary delays ceased and that incompetent control was removed."
