THE MAYORALTY
MR, T. S. WESTON ASKED TO . STAND. An influential deputation of Wellington citizens waited upon Mr. T. Sliftiler Weston yesterday to aslc that lie should allow himself to be nominated for the office of Mayor of the city. Members of the deputation said that the next two years would 1)0 critical ones in tho municipal activities of the city. ' There wero lujiny important works to be undertaken and iunny difficulties to bo faced. . It was important that the Mayoral oflico should bo held by au energetic and able Mayor, who Would 'bo ablo to devote a large part of his tirno to his civic duties. The present Mayor, Mr. J. P. Luke, M.l\, had occupied the Mayoralty for six years, and tho members of the deputation considered that a now hand at the helm would bo desirable this year. They did not know that Mr. Luko would stand for re-election, but in any enso they considered it unwise, from tho point of view of tho city's interests, that the Mayor should be a man who had Parliamentary duties to attend to. Mr. Weston replied (hat he appreciated the honour that had been done him b,v tho deputation. Ito was disposed to aecedo to Iho request if lie could mako ceirtnin business and oilier arrangements. It would be essential for Him to complete these arrangements before lie could, give « definite reply to the deputation. ' 11.0 would take the matters in hand at onco and make his decision lit an early date.
