BOWLS

• NEWTOWN WIN CHAMPION ' RINKS. In the semi-final of the champion rinks, a fine contest took place between Wellington and Newtown, resulting in a win for the latter by a single point. The score was 19 all on the twentieth head, and hefore ono rink or the other could get that coveted extra point (eventually secured by Newtown) another three heads had to be played (as the result of two dead-hejids). The scores wene as follow:— f Karori beat Hataitai, 19—16. Newtown beat Wellington, 20—19. THE FINAL. The final game between Newtown and Karori attracted a big "bank" at the Thorndon green yesterday afternoon. Newtown, on paper, were best fancied, and they proved to be the best rink on the day's play, finally winning the championship by a ten-point margin. The result was as follows.— Newtown—Warwick, Astill, Russell, Duff (s.), 23; Karon-Henderson, Needham, Roberts, Cooper (s.), 13. An examination of the card showed the rather peculiar fluctuation of the scores on both sides. Newtown scored first and on the sixth head had notched 8 points, but stuck on that score until | Karori crept slowly level (on the eleventh head). Then Newtown spurted with 2-2-2-3 on the next four succeeding heads, making the score 17 —8 on the fifteenth head. Karori looked down by the head and sinking, but one never can tell—at bowls. By the accurate drawing of Needham and Cooper,-Karori pulled off a two and a three on the next two-heads, 17—13. Newtown's lead and No. 3 drew so well on the eighteenth head that Kami's, skip had to drive. He cut his own "saviour" out, and Newtown lay three shots—2o—l3. Karori lay a dubious single when the skips went down on the nineteenth head, and Cooper wanted a bunch. So he drove the kitty to the side line, where Newtown in a single. On the twentieth head. Newtown were again in allianco with the jack when the skips had to play, and again Cooper faileS to shift the shot bowls by driving, thus rendering it unnecessary to play the final head. Needham • (No. 2)' played most consistently well for Karori, and both Russell (3) and Duff (skip) were in fine form on the ■ Newtown, yde.
