The quarterly meeting of the Hutt Li censing Committee wns held nt tho Lowei Hutt on AVednesday, Mr. W. G. Riddell. S.M., being in the chair." There were also present Messrs. J. W. M'Eweii, J. Cotton, W. Cotton. W. Welch, and W. Wearno. An application was made for tho transfer of a iicenee from A. G. Bland to H. B. Perkins. An objection was made by the police on the ground that there was a case pending against the licensee. This objection was overruled bv the Bench, who stated that if the business was not conducted properly it could be reviewed again at the annual meeting of the Licensing Committee. Tho monthly meeting .of the Hutt District High School Committee was held last evening. There were present Messrs. Meldrum. Alexander, West, AVray, Doraii, Kyle, MT)ougall, and Smith (secretary). In the absence of the chairman (Mr. E. P Itishworth), Mr. Meldrum occupied the chair. The headmaster reported that the average attendance in the primary department was 519, and 41 in the secondary department. Tho Education Board advised that the appointment of Mr. 'I'amblyn aa headmoster and Mr. i>. Mason as' first assistant would take effect from April 1. Miss Winnio Mather was appointed to fill a vacancy on tho staff. It was reported that owing to the overcrowded state of some of the classrooms one class had to be taken out m the open air, end the secretary was instructed to write to the Education Board, drawing their attention to the overcrowded state of the class-rooms, and asking them to provide increased accommodation It was decided that the annual picnic be held on Friday, March 21, at tho The monthly meeting of the Hutt River Board was held last evening. Present: Messrs H. Baldwin (chairman), W. Knight, M. Welch, and G. Bowers. On tho motion of the chairman it was decided to ask the overseer to report on tho cost of fencing off the river, in order to protect the young'willows, with a view of coming to an arrangement with property-owners to pay for the first cost of fencing, the board to undertake -repairs. Protests were received froni the. Petone, Borough Council, and Mr. I*. 1London, as a ratenayer, against the proposed action of the board in granting of 15 -venrs. with a right of removal of shingle from the river for .ho period of fifteen years, with a rnrht of removal for a further 15 years. It was decided to replv that the Tight, of removal by the local bodies in tho district, and also by private residents had been safeguarded, and that in proposing to lease the bench tho board wns conserving t!"> financial interests of the ratepayers.
