DISASTROUS CLOUDBURST
SERIOUS DAMAGE IN MELBOURNE SUBURB. ; Melbourne March fl. A cloudburst at Footscray (three and a half miles west of the city) Caused serious damage. A man attempting to drive a- horse and cart across a culvert was swept-away and drowned. At many place.? the water was 8J feet deep on the roads. People were compelled to seek refuge on rcofs. The police rescued many by means of boats. Several large manufacturing establishments were damaged, mid the Colonial Ammunition Company was compelled to close, throwing a thousand hands out of work. It is estimated that during the night ten inches of rain fell. During the height of the storm the Barnet Glass and Rubber Company s factory, which covers an area of threequarters of an acre, caught fire. The firemen were unable to get near the building as it was surrounded by water 5 feet deep, and were compelled to work from boats. After hours of strenuous fighting the fire was controlled, but the building was gutted:—Press Assn.
