He was captain of the Slanawatu for six'years, when ho took charge .oi his former steamor tho Rangatira,. which was later lost near Taranalti while-in chargo of the first, mate, A few.months later Captain Harvoy joined Mr. E, Green-, wood, an engineer, and purchased tho Sampson, oi which vessel he was captain for about a year, when she waß wrecKed.Tho partners' next purchase was the paudio steamer Hauraki, -, which thoy converted into a screw stoamer, and. rpsujueii trading oh the coast. About threo years later-this vessel sprang a loalt and sank. In neither'of these ' misfortunes were any livos lost. In 1883 Captain Harvey joined the firm of Levin and Co. Wellington, as. captain of tho Napier, but as this vessel waß not large enough for the trade, he went to Sydney in 1849 and purchased tho Queen of the South, in which vessel he is part owner,with Messrs. Levin and Co. and Mr. William Signal. He has been in command of the Queen of the South since that time, but was for a few months relieving oil the HiipUang! when she was run by Levin and Co. Captain Harvey's dualities as a 6caman brought him into .prominence in many parts of New Zealand, and liis. dopfirlu'ro from the ranks of the coastal traders will bo regretted by many old friends who, at the same time, will congratulate him on tho rest he has so well earned,
