GOLF NOTES

The M 7 ellington Golf Club have issued p. programmo for a tournament to be played on the Heretaunga links during the Easter holidays. This', will be tho first tournament of note since the end of the war, and l the forerunner of others. The open championship is sure to be played this year, and golfers will welcome a few tournaments before that event. The links at Heretaunga have been ■ well.looked after since the trouble in Europe started,-and golfers will bo assured of a perfect course to play over during the holidays. _ The municipal links at Berhampore are in fine cbndition. The green 3 are a credit to the greenkeener, and it is 1 without any hesitation t say that they are at present the' best plavine greens in the AYellington district. They could be greatly improved by cutting out the bottom wire of the fence which surrounds the.greens. The players are too often handicapped by it in playing a short chip shot. Players of othei clubs ought to have a round on these links' at present.

Golfers who value their flubs oiighi to look after them well, as the materials for club-making have advanced in an extraordinary way. Shafts which at one time could be bought in the rough state in England for Is. 6d. are now quoted at 7s. 6d.; and they are of an inferior grade. 'Tiro outlook is not good, as American advices say there will be a shortage ■ for some time.

The following in Mr. Lloyd George's fine philosophy on golf:—"Golf is tho only game in which the'worst player gets the best of it. I obtain more out of it as regards both,exercise and enjoyment, for the good player gets worried over the slightest mistake, whereas the poor player makes too many mistakes to worry over them, and is. bent .upon getting all the enjoyment he? can out of the game. That is tho position I occupy at golf, and I do not mind how long I occupy it." *

The Patoena. which sailed for Nelson yesterday, was crowded with excursionists, who intend being present at the Richmond course to-morrow, to see the Nelson Cup run. Last year Rose Pink beat Mascot in the big event, and the first-named is again to comnetc, but this year 9he has an additional 151b. to carry.

With fewer, sheep jin tlio United States, by 12,000,000, than there wore seventeen years ago, it is not strange that the Government is asking farmers lo raise' more wool-producing animals. The now familiar slogan, "Ten hens in every back yard," is supplemented by another, "A bunch of' sheep* in every farmyard." The appeal is made espcci-' ally to farmers in the com belt,"but eastern farmers, too, arc becoming interested. Tlio great sheep ranches of the West are being broken up, and it is being ..urged that new methods of sheep-raising must be developed.
