CARTAGE RATES
INCREASES DECIDED UPON BY . CARRYING- FIRMS. A meeting of Wellington carrying firms was held on Monday last to decide what should be-done in the/way of raising cartage 1 rates in'view of the recent further increase in the rates of wages, the cost- of . horse . feed, and {other factors. 'The. hew. drivers''award conies into force to-morrow, March 1, . .' ' It. was pointed out that just prior to tlie wfir period drivers' wages were .£2 Bs. and i! 2 ■ 12s. for single and double horse drivers, respectively; whilst the decision N arrived at by the'recent Conciliation Council at Auckland increases the rates to .£3; lis.. fid. and J!3,195. 6d. for the same:hours of work. As regards horse feed, pre-war costs were .£3 10s. per ton for chaff and ,2s. a bushel for onts; while, this year it appears as if chaff, .cannot be-purchased under ,£8 per ton and oats are quoted at present at fis. 3d.' per bushel. The cost of shoeing and repairs and other incidental expenses in connection wftU a; carrying business have alsb'rincreased, ;in': many instances over. 50 per cent.; ' : ■ ; ._
Another. factor : in determining an increase of rates is ,the 'fact that, on an average, ■ the present driver cannot get through the samo quantity of work -jjow-. as "in. pre-war periods.,- This is due to Iwo'causes.,'''.' First, owing to the want of sufflcifint shed accommodation on the ,wharves, there is considerable delay in. the delivery, of goods, and much time is lost ' by drivers 'for'.which the employers get'no return,, while wages are going on ■allHhe time; and, secondly, many of tho better ..class of drivers ha.v'e become .attneli&f'itp other. snheres of wori.-, no doubt : owing rto the. better conditions offering therein, 'arid many also went to the war, never to return. _ The industry ;has thus ljeen' : left in a decidedly inferior position as regards efficiency as compared with' a few. years ago.' This inferiority has resulted in less work being done, land' the claims against the employers for damage done in the handling of goods and for the wrongful acceptance of goods pillaged or damaged have materially increased. ■ After carefully going into the matter it waT decided that the following rates should prevail until' conditions substanti ally:niter: v Rates to the Public. , .
