HARMONIC SOCIETY
■ ANNUAL MEETING. The alimuil meeting of the Wellington Harmonic . foeiety was held at the Y.M.G.A. last evening, Mr. F. S. Pope presiding. In moving the adoption of the annual report the chairman said that he would like to make a few remarks regarding the state of music in Wellington as compared with twenty-five years ago. It appeared to him'thpi'the'state of music m Wellington to-day was distinctly behind the standard of twenty-five years ago. In those days there was a great deal ot earnest study of music and the performance of music. The-study of music in the homes was greater in those days thanit was now. He strongly recommended that evoryone should realise the ;;reat necessity for a moro earnest and solid study of music. He attributed the present decadence of music to the negled of the children's musical education. A* far as he could see tho child was tiuighi. music when very young, but was permitted to discontinue practice at a very early age. By this interest in musical studios was at once lost, with the. result that the performance of music was fast losing its hold. The musical ediit'aion was one which should not ; be neglected, mid he trusted that the society wculd continue to achieve the success it had attained during the past four years in furthering its musical educational value. It was unanimously decided, to pay a sum of 35 guineas to tho society s conductor, Mr. H. Temple White, a sum of £i ss. to the secretary, Mr. C. J. Ellison, and a sum of £5 3s. to the accompanist, Miss Hanify, in recognition of their services.
