PRESBYTERIAN ASSEMBLY

ASSISTANCE FOE SOLDIER-STU-DENTS. ■ By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, February 24. At the Presbyterian General Assembly to-day Chaplain Ronald Watson said it was very necessary to give fcareful consideration to the theological students of the Church who had- returned from the war, in order that they should fit themselves for the ministry ,is soon as possible, The restlessness of the military life, the wanderlust, together with the jbsence of books, made it difficult for a man at the front to get down to 6tudy again and to keep his nerves on the grindstone. Tho Church now was represented in the Free Church College, Glasgow, by fine students of strong, Christian character. It was wise to send students to the Old Country, as there they got into touch with great social and labour' problems. It was 'wise also to keep in touch with th» students. When he was attending a meeting of Presbyterian chaplains in Franco proposals forwarded by the Theological. Committee blew in on them like a refreshing breeze. Tho chaplain spoko highly of General Richardson's kindness in giving three Presbyterian students in the ranks opportunity to attend Freo Church College, Glasgow. At the opening of the session the Assembly decided to establish a fund to help soldier-students, and to commend it to the 1 sympathy and liberality of tho people.

Tho Theological Committee was instructed to prepare a booklet on the claims of tho ministry,.and to bring the claims before young men; also to make arrangements for continuing the studies of students on active service.

The committee recommended that as Dr. Watt, professor of Hebrew at Knox College, had announced his intention to resign at the close of the next session, a committee should be appointed to confer with the Synod of Otago and Southland.as to his successor.

The no-license question was brought under the notice of the Assembly by the Hevs. J. J. North and S. Lawry, of the New Zealand Alliance, who attended as a deputation to ask the Assenibfy to put its full strength into the campaign. Mr. North said it was recognised that tho Eresbyterian Church had done tremendous work for the cause. Mr. Lawry said the cause on April 10 might hang on a ?ingle vote, and every Christian man and woman should be 6ure that his and her vote counted. Tho Assembly thanked the deputation, and expressed 6trong appreciation of the objects of the alliance. >

> It was resolved that no more' students should be admitted to the course for home Imisßionaries in the Theological Hall after 1921.

Motions expressing the Assembly's gratification with the signing of the armistice, and the near approach of peace, and with the formation of the League of Nations were agreed to. The Assembly to-night accepted the Invercargill Presbytery's invitation to the Assembly to hold its 1919 meeting in Invercargill.

It was decided to remit for the consideration of the. presbyteries a proposal that assistant ministers should be granted a seat on the courts of the church, tlt was decided to urge sessions and presbyteries to hold decision days to bring to personal decision for. Christ young and old, and especially the young people of the Sabbath schools. It was agreed to remit'to the presbyteries foi; consideration a proposal to provide for junior membership in the church.
