Experiments made at the Pasteur Institute in Paris by M. Kayser indicate that the seaweed L'aminaria, digitata is a promising sourco of alcoliol. The plants, previously washed to extract the mineral salts, or unwashed, were reduced by evaporation to 10 per cent. They wero then treated with water containing from II to (i per cent, of sulphuric acid for half an hour or an hour, at 122deg. C. Tho sugary fluid was neutralised to I per cont. of.acidity, nitrogenous material added in some cases, and wns sprinkled with brewers' yeast. Fermentation was readily induced, especially in the flasks containing nitrogenous material, and an averago of six litres of alcohol per 1001b. of dry seaweed was obtained.
