THE COMPETITIONS

The vocal and dancing classes , were not completed until 5.45 p.m. in the large hall, and upstairs in the Concert .Chamber budding .reciters kept Mr. JF. Montague busy until 6.30 p.m. Whilst "to many classes (in the ono day) may provide'n field day for the children, tho afternoon session was .rather -too long, and in some instances the same group ot •children were engaged in different ; classes; whicli'tended to diminish the interest slightly. On the whole the experiment of making ; Saturday a children's day" was quite a success both ' halls being well filled throughout the day" There was also a' very largo audi.ence present at the evening performance, which was bright and varied througli--o\ho results of the day's work were as follow:— .. ~ ' - ■ ~ Humorous Recitation, boy or gni, under 12; Own selection-Recalls: Ngairo Phipson, Betty Menard, Stella Chapman, and Hazel Commended: Thelnm Aitken, Dorothy M'Dowell, Claia Nicholls, Joyce Julian, and Sinclair Breen. EVENING PROGRAMME. The evening ontertainmenfc was very well attended. . It was opened.. by a children's play, which gave n numl)er of „ little girls an opportunity to display thoir budding histrionic talent. The performers were;— Misses Iris Eggers, Bettina Gavill, Feo Smyth, Eetty AVikon, ■ Marjorie Wills, Kathleen Flanagan, Mavie Davidson, Janet Lewis, Maxwell Bosher, and Molly Gambrill. In the toe dance (under twelve), which was the first competitive section, the house witnessed a dainty exhibition by all three recalls. Miss Beneo Taylor, howevor, so far out-distanced in grace and agility tho other two little competitors, that slio was announced by Miss Polly M'Laron, as having won by a margin of 21) points. The humorous recitation for boy or • girl (under, twelve) brought young entertainers, one of whom ' (Miss Stella Chapman, Christchurch) gave startling extracts from her childhood history, always with the defensive comment, But I couldn't help it, couldn't I?" There was no room for doubt as to what tho audience thought about littlo Miss Chapman's performance, and. the judge endorsed the general verdict by assigning to her first place. • A most delightful item of the evening's entertainment was Iho comedietta, "A Cockney Camouflage," by members of tho Charley's Aunt Club. With an excellent Cockney accent and any amount of humour, the players presented to tho audience a fragment from the romantic career of one Bill Spriggins, M.M. "Bill" wore hospital blue, being but recently returned from a place where. he had garnered u Military Medal and much distinction. '. Sprigins, seiiT., who was quite an'.irrepressible sort of gentleman, was a triumph of make-up and general characterisation. Mrs. Spriggins and the necessary 'love-interest" were both good pieces of work. The audience heartily enjoyed the "camouflage" by which tho 'Military Medallist effectively ensnared his coquettish lady-love,-and taught her

the one little lesson that she needed most. Commenting during the evening upon the performances in some of the musical sections, Mr. Harold Grcgson (judge) said that little Miss Hazel liardwieke, winner of the piano solo under ten, played with a pretty touch, smoothly, and with discreet employment of tho pedal. With regard to the song in character, for boy or girl (nine and under twelve), ho said that the winning • pevformnnco (Master Winston M'Carthy's imitation of Harry Lauder) was that of a born comedian. There was not a real contralto in the contralto solo; and the nearest approach was Jiot successful in gaining the prize. Two very good performances were given in the competition for vocal soloists, with accompaniment and obbligato. The winners (Miss Paterson, Miss Olapp, and Mr. Tinker) scored 2015 points, of which 4fl were given for the accompaniment .and 42 for the obbligato. The second ' place was sained byijtfr. Britteudcn, Miss -Henry, and Mr. Brodie, with 204. points, of which 41 and 40 were given, for accompaniment and obbligato respectively. The bass solo was not up to standard, said Mr. Oregon, and there would therefore be no first award.
