: PATHETIC DROWNING TRAGEDY. .By. Telegraph.-Special Correspondent. Wanganui, February 22. ,' Three ohildren, Dennis Fisher and Noel " and Mildred Crawford, were, playing on • the riyer bank just below the railway : bridge at Aranionb, when the boy Crawford fell into the river, which is rather deep at that locality. Dennis Fisher bravely tried to rescue his little com- , rade, but without success. Mildred Crawford, aged about ten, then tried.to help her brother, but fell in also, and Dennis Fisher just saved himself by hanging on to the branch of a willow tree overlapping the water. The brother and sister both disappeared, and Fisher was'rescued from his perilous position by a boy named Royland.' The,alarm having been given, & < search was made for the bodies, but dragging operations were suspended this afternoon oiling to a strong tide running. . , .SUDDEN DEATH. By Teleirraoh—Press Association, Christchurch, February 22. James Edward Shaw, aged 64, married, night watchman at the Kajapoi Woollen Mills, was found dead this morning, apparently heart failure being the cause of death. , . . OLD SETTLER'S'DEATH. Waikato, February 22. News was received from Taneatua this ■ morning that a man named J. Glen, about eighty years of age, a resident of long standing, was found dead iu a detached bedroom at bis residence at' Taneatua township, with a gunshot wound in the head. A double-barrelled gun was found beneath the body. An inquest is being held.'- i
„'. RIGHT LEG. FEACTUEED.' A youth named Simpson, aged 17 years,received a fracture of his right leg whilst mustering sheep at Pahautanui on Saturday. He was riding a horse ■ when the animal stumbled and fell. Simpson was admitted to the Public Hospital at 2.45 p.m. on Saturday. ' '. WOMAN INJURED. A woman named, Agnes Burns, who resides ■at No. 199 Tory. Street, • hod the misfortune to fall down a pit in the Newtown tram sheds on Saturday afternoon, receiving an inj 1117 to her wrist. She was removed to the hospital at 5.30 p.m., and is reported to be doing well. SHIP'S. TRIMMER INJURED. Whilst attempting to board the New Zealand Shipping - Company's liner Euahine at the Glasgow wharf at G. 85 p.m. on Saturday, Peter'Metz, a trimmer, fell 1 from the gangway to the wharf, a dis•tance of 14ft., and sustained injuries which necessitated his removal to the Public Hospital.
It appears that the gangway was mounted on a crane, and whilst orossing to board the ship he attempted to grasp the handrail, but missed it, and fell to the wharf. Dr. Mead, the ship's doctor, was immediately summoned, and an : examination of Mefcz showed that he was suffering from a fracture of two ribs and shock, and possibly internal injuries. Metz wag removed to the hospital in the Harbour Board' 6 ambulance. The'police Reported yesterday that Metz was improving, and as yet there was no sign of internal injuries.
'■•AN EPILEPTIC SEIZUEE. / 'A returned discharged 6oldier named D. Jforim had an epileptic seizure in Courtenay Place at about 5.15 • last evening. He wa6 promptly attended to by passers-by, and recovered in a few minutes sufficiently to proceed to his home. He injured himself .about the face when ho fell to the ground. .
