MEDICAL STUDENTS WITH THE N.Z.E.F.
PROTEST AT THE SENATE MEETING. ■By TeleKraph-Press Association. Christchurch, February 22. It was stated by Professor H. Lindo Ferguson at the New Zealand University Senate to-day that a number of medical students with the Expeditionary Force had obtained the consimt of BrigadierGeneral Richardson and the sanotion of the Otago University to continue their studies at Home. 'Many were at the trlasgow University. The Chancellor (Sir Robert Stout) asked why the men were not demobilised and sent back to New Zealand. "It is the sluopiiig shortage," suggested Professor T. A. Hunter. • Professor Ferguson said that he •thought the authorities did not like to give them the preference fearing- that the cry of class distinction would be raised. ."Class distinction! What about the miners ? They are sending them back \" exclaimed the Chancellor; . • . "Oh, they have moro votes/' was Professor Ferguson's reply. In protesting against the position disclosedfthe Chancellor said that it was to be regretted that the Government was still keeping those students abroad. Apart from the foolishness of keeping them nominally as soldiers it'was unfair to J the Otago University.
