LATIN NO LONGER A "COMPULSORY"
FOR MATRICULATION. By Telegraph--Press Association. Christchurclv February 22. The University Senate decided by a majority of one voto that Latin should not be a compulsory subject nt the matriculation examination for students in arts. The arguments advanced tor and against the proposal, which was submitted as a recommendation to tho benate bv tho Board of Studies, were on tho same'lines as those put forward at the Senate meetings in recent years, tho strpnorters contending that Latin was tho universal language of science and a necessary qualification for those proceed, ing to tho study of languages English, or science. Tho opponents of tho recommendation contended that the trend of modem educational opinion was to eliminate Latin as an essential subject for any of the university degrees.
