United. Stales soldiers were supplied with two kinds of boots—field and marching. The War Department at Washington recently made contracts for two million pairs of. "metallic-fastened" field and marching boots at a, total cost of nearly three million sterling. The prices fixed were about 295. a. pair for the field boots and 265.' a pair for the ■ marching boots of average size, and 30s. for. field boots, of extra large size and 345. for marching, with some shading of the figures in between. One firm was given a contract for 350,000 pairs at a cost of over half a million sterling, and another firm for 200,000 pairs at about ,£230,000.
