THE CRICKET SHIELD

AUCKLAND V. CANTERBURY SOUTHERNERS BATTING ' By Telegraph.—Press Association. j Christchurch, February 21. i The rlunket Shield match, Auckland v. Canterbury was commenced at Ilagley ] .Park this afternoon in glorious weather, j The wicket looked perfect, though some of tho batsmen said that if was tricky. There was a fair attendance. Auckland ' is known to be a strong batting side, but there were misgivings about their I bowling, which was commonly supposed | to he of a very ordinary character, and , tho play to-day bore this out. There was ; one bowler of outstanding merit on, the! side, Smith, and the rest wero very or- | dinar, y. Under the circumstances Canterbury's batting was on tho whole distinctly disappointing, and it must bejadmitted that Canterbury were, lucky to get' 271 lor seven wickets. Wood and Brunton were the only two batsmen who Teally played Bound* and confident cricket. Thomas certainly made a good score, but it was one of the luckiest performances seen for a long time. Lusk tell a victim to his lack of tactics, inasmuch as he tried on the second ball of the game for j a stroke that a batsman would find difficult enough when ho had liis eye in. I Woods's 95 stood out as a performance j of sterling merit. Ho played Smith very . skilfully. Brunton played delightful free | and attractive cricket for his runs.. The 1 manner of his dismissal was decidedly unlucky. Of the Auckland attack Smith looked the only bowler capable of ever beating the batsmen. He was in a class by himself. A bowler of his parts naturally depends largely on the field for his wickets, and it must be said that his side let him down very badly. Taken all round Auckland's fielding was not

good. Scores Canterbury-First Innings. Lusk, b. Smith 0 Jones, c. Heinus, b. Smith AVood, b. Smith 9» Patrick, c. W. E. Garrard, b. Smith 8 Hayes, c. D. It. Garrard, b.
