The trans-Pacific freighter Waimarino, which has been engaged on Imperial service, has been released for a voyage to Australia, The vessel left Vancouver on February 5 with a general cargo for Australia. Mr. Lowry, who was formerly on the Eona, lias joined the barquentine Uma as chief officer. Mr. M. 'Singleton, chief officer of the Union Steam Ship Company's freighter Flora, has come ashore on leave. Tho one-tiuie Lyttelton-Wellinglon ferry steamer Kotomahana., which for some yearn has been engaged on the Australian coast, is now indefinitely laid up at Melbourne. ■The liner Ayrshire, which loaded al Auckland last week, lifted a record ship, ■ment of butter at that port, totallinc 128,550 boxes. Sho also loaded a. large quantity of cheese at Auckland. The Ayrshire is now loading at fiisborne, and is due at Wellington to-day to complete. She is fixed' to leave Wellington early next week for Liverpool The steamer Trafalgar, a new British cargo-carrier, now at Melbourne loading wheat, is one of the "special" erain licet roleased to load Australian wheat and flour to Imperial Government account. She was launched last year by J!. Duncan and Co'., Ltd.. Glasgow. When the armistice was signed the Trafalgar was in dry dock at Barry. She is on her first , visit to Australia. The voyage just completed was accomplished free of exciting l incident. The chiof officer Baw the British standard ship War Melody in course of construction. The ship, lie says, was constructed in 52 days. The Trafalgar is of 5021 tons gr<)Sß, 405 ft. long, and 53ft. in beam. According to the Dunedin "Star" the American four-masted schooner C. S. llolmcs, which was becalmed 15 miles off Otago Heads on Tuesday morning last,, has not yet been reported as having arrived at Bluff, her discharging port. The, C. S. Holmei is from San Francisco, and has 2Q.ZCO cases of benzine and 3fl.OCOft. of timber consigned to Messrs. A. S. PaterBon and Co., of Dunedin. • The Kuraw. en route to Wellington from San Franco with a full shipment of general merchandise, left Papeete on Saturday last. She is due at Wellington on Itbruary 25. The F. aud S. liner Dagheld iB at present in Australia, but is due to arrive in New Zealand shortly to load for Liverpool. For several months past telephonic communication between the mainland and East Oape lighthouse has been interrupted. Tho cable parted. And has not since hesa repaired. Although reports supplied by tlis lignthonso officials as to passing shippiug are of considerable importance, it has been dcoided to hold the of communication with the lighthouse to stand over till a wireless apparatus can | be installed. The Poßt and Telegraphic Department is at present short of the necessary 1 material to renew the cable service. Yeserday afternooa the new barquentino Hesperian berthed at the Clydo Quay Wharf from San Francisco. Her arrival here completes lier maiden voyage, for she was built during tho shipping crisis in Bmart timo at Portland. Oregon, by the firm of Kolph and Co. Sho is a very .neatly-constructed vesßel of 1215 tons, arid iB claimed to bo a smart Efliler, although the trip from tho American port 1 occunied 55 days. The somewhat lengthy trip was due to a succession of calms, and otherwise tho voyage- waß devoid of anything interesting. Captain Olsen !b in command, and liflß with him Mr. Wm. Taylor as first mate, and Mr. Dill as second. The vessel lias about 2000 tons of general merchandise for disliearge here, together wifh about half a million sup. feet of timber. , Owintr to beinfr delayed ,at Tarakohe. the Anchor Shipping Company's steamer Alexander will not sail for Kelson and W?6t Coast till noon on Saturday.
