THE PICNIC SEASON
The second annual picnic of the Na-. tional Provident arid Friendly Societies'' Department was held in beautiful/ weather at Day's Bay. ;.A sports programme, was successfully carried' through, and some very close finishes - ' resulted, not-" ably, in -the' Cadet' Race, which ended twice in a dead-heat for first place. At the third run-off Mr. Dickson gaiiied the vgrdict by inches., Results of events: — Ladies' swimming racei Miss-Anderson; men's swimming race, Mr. Steel r 50yds. ladies' handicap, Miss Woodhouse; 100 yds." men's handicap, Mr. _ Pollock j 100 yds. cadeV race, -Mr. .Dickson; relay race, Miss Ferguson, ,Miss Smedley, Mr". Bates, .and .Mr. Spraggon; three-legged race, Miss Potts aiid'Mr, Jenkins; hop, step, and jump, Mr. Leamy; tug-of-war, Miss Flannery. - A number of children's races were also held. ' At the conclusion of the. sports programme rounder? were indulged in,' and subsequently nil the: party partook, of.'aiterrioon tea in the pavilion. After justice had been done to the good things provided, Mrs. Hayes (wife of the supprintendent) presented the prizes.. ■ The staff-of,-Messrs. Odlin Timber and Hardware C 0.,: Ltd., "held their annual picnic at Maidstone Park, Upper Hutt. - During the day a. cricket match was played betwoen tlie timber and hardware departments; resulting in a win for the former.
