— Hj ' , MEETING OF THE COUNCIL At the fortnightly meeting of the Wellington City Council last evening the following recommendations from the various committees-wero dealt with:—_ The Finance and Property Committees fc-'commendod That the Hataitai. Municipal Electors' Association be invited to submit sug-, gestions for tho Relief of over-crowding' and erection of. lodginghouses, etc.; that tho same association bo informed that tho council would consider the construction of a traffic tunnel to the eastern suburbs -when framfng the schedule of works to be undertaken; that the residents of Upjjer Duncan Terrace be informed that improvements to tho street would be commenced as soon as possible; 'that the corporation employees 6liould be granted a holiday on' March 1 for the holding of their aniutal picnic," and also t'hat they should be granted tho use of the Day's Bay grounds for the occasion. The report was adopted. The Power Stations and Tramways Committee .recommended:— < That Hie Hataitai Municipal Electors' Association he informed that the extension of .the tramway from Hataitai to iioseneath' would be considered when material was available.
The report was adopted. The By-laws, Fire Brigade, and Street Lighting Committee recommended:— ■ That the engineer 'be instructed to. proceed -with the erection of an additional lamp in Wade Street East. That permission be granted to tho Austral iap Automatic Weighing Machiuo Company to place machines at the lulbirnie and Lyall Bay tramway. 6helters. That the council to the erection of the proposed Methodist Memorial Hall in Cuba Street, subject, to conditions imposed by the City Engineer. That , with the view, of checking the stray dog nuisauce in the city a man should be engaged temporarily .in seeing that the requirements of the Dog Registration Act, 1003, werb co.mplied with, and also that 10s. should be the minimum suni for which any dog should be sold at the unclaimed dog sales. The report was adopted. The Outlying Districts Committee recommended
That the owner of A property; at Priscilla Crescent, Momington, 6hould be compelled to carry out the work of reinstatement of the' toad support to the satisfaction of the City Engineer. That the Melrose Electors' Association should be informed: (a) That the council would put in hand improvements to Antico and Caprera Streets after a number of urgent works had been completed; (h) that the asphalting »of footways in : and Sutherland Roads would be completed before the expiration of the year; (c) that iip to the present the conn cil had been unable to consider the association's proposal for improving the stormwater drainage of the Melrose district; (d) that the council at its last meeting had adopted a proposal for improving i the entrance to the Zoo, and that as soon . as possible the works would be carried | out.' - " | The report was adopted. I | The Reserves and Public Gardens I Committee recommended:—That the Wellington Caddie Education Board be ' granted the use of Newtown Park on March 17, with authority to chairge for J admission, subject to tho usual conditions. That'the Wellington Cricket Association be granted authority to charge for admission to the Basin Reserve on February 28, Marph 1 and 3. on the occasion of the representative cricket ■match. Auckland v. Wellington. That the the small piece of Town Belt in front of the Oriental Bay Kiosk . should lie informed that unless they kept tlie area in a condition satisfactory to Ihe Director of Parks and Reserves the lease of such land would be cancelled. That a plan of the proposed- new entrance to tho Botanical Gardens should lie adopted bv the council, <■ nd that authority should be granted I'or the work of nltering t.he entrance; a'so that tho erection of the necessary gates Should be proceeded with. The report was adopted.
