HOARDINGS ON THE MAIN THOROUGHFARES
CITY COUNCIL 1 AND RAILWAY DE-. . PARTMENT. The By-Laws Committee of. the City Council last evening reported that it had received from the General Manager of the New Zealand Railways a,. reply; to the council's protest; against the creation of certain hoardings on the Railway Department's land at the corner of. Taranaki and Wakefield Streets. The reply pointed out that the Depart' ment's powers in tho matter were not liable to restriction by the local by-laws, and stated that the conditions were such as to ensure that the hoarding would bo kept in a creditable state. The concluded: "The | Department is not desirous of any coniiict with the City Council, and this letter is sent in the hops that upon reconsideration the oouncu will see it's way to recede from the position previously taken up." Councillor Barber übserved last, evening, that the council had prevent as far as possible the erection of bill-boards fronting the main thoroughfares, .butv though it. had protested against the Railway Department's contravention of its. wishes, it had been un< able to get tho Department to see eye to eyo with it regarding. the hoarding in question. Several councillors expressed -strong views upon tho refusal of the Railway Department to comply with the by-laws, and Councillor Bennett moved:— That the council enter a. strong, protest; that representations to this effect be forwarded to the Minister of Railways; aitd.thafa. c&py of the letter be sent to tho Minister of Internal Affairs, who is organising the Town . Planning ' Conference. .. The motion was carried.
