IN NEW GUINEA
i The Lieutenant-Governor of Papua, j Judge Murray, who arrived in Melbourne a few days ago, expressed, in an interview, his. opinion that there was i>o obstacle in the' way of placing ,German New Guinea and Papua under ono administration. All the conditions, he said, were practically identical, and the boundary .was an. imaginary one. Judkfe Murray further gave an account of a patrol conducted by a Papuan magistrate mainly through German territory. At first the natives encountered manifested .great hostility, but ou learning . that the patrol was British and r.ot ' German,, they became friendly. A native chief, in : answer to a question, said he thought <Lt first the patrol was German, and the Germans were no good.
