domestic: SCIENCE
'..(By "Vox"). A. project for' tho establishment of a school of domestic science in Wellington is "again forced upon the consideration of the local Education Board by Mr. J. S. Tennant. Some years ago the matter was brought forward by Mr. W. S. La Trobe. Both these gentlemen are fine educationists, and any project put . forward by.cither of them would be worthy of serious 'consideration by the board,. Any project that is endorsed by. both will surely get a stop further forward than "consideration." . The board has decided to co-operate witli Victoria College Council. Dqes this mean that this matter .which is of such tremendous importance to girls and women (one assumes that lads and youpg.men will not wish to take the course!) is to be a man-made scheme? Surely it is a matJ ter entirely within the scope of women. The unsatisfactory condition under which the only practical domestic training now obtainable is at present carried out here should be conclusive proof that the men, who have been sole organisers in the past, are not in their natural element in the sphere of domestic science: at least, in ' practical apolica-. lion. One would think they would be really glad' to relegate such work to women, or' if they feel they, cannot so far trust them, at least'to co-ouerate with them.- The successes of the present are, more often than not, built upon the mistakes of the . past. One would wish to see a school of domestic science designed -by women, staffed by women, the syllabus planned by -women, and the work of examination carried out; by women. The .whole course of instruction would be suited to conditions of life iii New Zealand, and women who .were capably of obtaining; a teacher's certificate from such a school would be an inestimable boon to country districts. Indeed, the benefits resulting from such a school would be so far-reaching that truly children would arise and call it blessed. There is no economic that has-such a (rain of misery and inefficiency in it' wftlre as' tlml of improper or badly cooked food,
