HATAITAI SCHOOL

■ EXTENSION SUGGESTED. A deputation representing residents of Hataitai interviewed tho Wellington Education Board yesterday morning to urge tho claims ,of their district to a full school. They asked that Hataitai should be constituted a school district, with boundaries as suggested in a petition already presented lo the board. ■ Mr. *A. D. Bayfield said that Hataitai had at least 500 houses and 2000 residents., but it, had not a full school, or representation on the Ivilbirnie School Committee. It was represented cn the Roseneath School' Committee. , Upper school children wero required at present to travel toom Hataitai to either Kilbirnio or Rosencath. The creation of a full school at. Hr.taitai would relieve the congestion at other schools. Tho chairman of tho board said that the lioard would consider the matter. Ho thought that Hataitai would bo entitled to a separate school at the end of this year. The board had received authority from the Education Department lo acquire land in Hataitai, but the money granted was not nearly sufficient. The matter was discussed at some length after the deputation had retired. Mr. Clark, chairman of tho Kilbimie School Committee, said that the lower standard? were full in Kilbirnie 'and Rosencath. But these schools were not overcrowded in tlic upper standards, 60 thai tho extension of the Hataitai school on that ground was not justified. He thought that the timo had not come yet for extending the Hataitai school, though it certainly would come. Other members of the board mentioned the desirability of reducing the size of classes where possible, and the inconvenience' suffered by children who had to walk over the hill or round the beach from Hataitai • to Ros.er.eath in bad weather. The matter was referred eventually to the Executive Committco for report.
