WELLINGTON CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES. The annual contest for the singles championship of tho Wellington Bowling Centre, was commenced on the Hutnitai Club's line green at 3 p.m. yesterday, when tho two byes-were played under conditions that none could complain of. After a long spell of dry weather the steady rain which fell during the cariv hours of tho day gave the sward a firm grip. Indeed the green, which played very true, was just n little too 'heavy for tho most interesting kind af play. Tlio bowls finished altogether too "dead" for any exhibition of thoso fine touches dear to the heart of the good singles player. Almost without exception tho play .was reduced to stolid <liawing, and lacked anything m the way of spectacular shots. Tho result of tlio two byes were -as follow:— '
