UNEMPLOYED SOLDIERS
PROVISION OF SUSTENANCE GRANTS.
Tho draft regulations then proceed to state;— 15. A Departmental officer may, on the recommendation of a district board or local committee, grant to an unemployed soldier sustenance up to such an amount as will ensure— (a) To a soldier a weekly income inclusive of pension of 425. (b) To a soldier with a wife, a weekly incomo inclusive of their'combined pensions of 525. (c) To a soldier with a wife and one child, a weekly income inclusive of their combined pensions of 555. Gd. (d) To a soldier with a wife and two children, a weekly income inclusive of their combined pensions of M 3' , ,•„ (e) To a soldier with a wile and three children, a weekly income inclusive of their combined pensions of G2s. Gd. (f) To a soldier with a wife and four children, or more, a weekly income' inclusive of their combined pensions, payable to the' soldier, his wife and four children of 66's. Provided that a widower with children shall be entitled to the same sustenance allowance as if his wife were living.
i Education and Training. IG. A Departmental officer, with the approval of a district board or local committeo, may arrange for free tuition and may grant sustenance at the rate set forth in the foregoing paragraph, together with a tuition allowance of Bs. per week, in the following cases:— (a) For applicants entered for education and training in technical schools or other State educational institutions, , (b) For applicants entered as students for training in commercial or professional occupations. 17. In tho case of an apprentice* whose training has been interrupted by war scrrice, n Departmental officer may, with the approval of a district board or local committee, grant sustenance during the time the apprentice is completing Ms apprenticeship at a rate which will bring his income inclusive of any pensions up to .£3 ner week. 18. A Departmental officer may, with the approval of a district, board or local committee, grant financial assistance in the caso of' applicants approved by an industrial committee and receiving trainin;,' in private workshops, ctcy in terms of' regulations issued by tlie'Discharged Soldiers' Information Department, dated December 3, 191".
19. A Departmental officer may, with tiie approval of n district board or local committee, provide training facilities in useful occupations for soldiers' widows, without child, and limy pay sustenance, whilst undergoing such training nt such rate as will bring their incomo (inclusive of pensions) up to 355. per week.
20. A Departmental officer may, with tho approval of a district board or loc-a] committee, pay such fees as are necessary in order to provide for the vocational or professional training of a discharged soldier. Purchase of Furniture, Tools, Equipment, Etc. 21. A Departmental officer may, with the approval of a district board or local committee, grant a discharged soldier or soldiers' widow financial assistance by way of loan (without interest) of an amount not exceeding >050 in each caso for (lie lHirehaso of- furniture.
22. A Departmental gfficer may, with the approval of si district bonrd or local committee, grant by way of loan (with, out. interest) an amount not exceeding .ESO in each case for the purchase of tools of trade and professional instruments or such other articles of personal equipment as is deemed necessary, to the applicant in exercising his calling. Travelling Warrants. • 23. A Departmental officer mny with tho approval of a district board or local committee, grant a free passage to an incapacitated soldior in cases where, having regard to medical opinions and general circumstances, it is considered desirable that he should be returned to relatives or friends living beyond New Zealand, provided that satisfactory evidence'is forthcoming that such relatives or friends arc prepared to care for such incapacitated soldier, and provided further that a free passage shall not bo granted wore than once to the. sanib applicant.
21. A Departmental officer may, with tlio approval of a district board or local committee, grant a freo passage to or from New Zealand, to the- widow of a deceased soldier desiring to return to relatives or friends provided that satisfactory evidence .is forthcoming that the applicant, is likely to benefit by the transfer, and provided further that a freo passage shall not bo granted .more than onto to the same -applicant. 25. Where an applicant is being sent thi-ou,the agency of the Department to employment his second-cla«s fare to his destination may be paid by tlie Department-
