FATAL FIRE IN AUCKLAND
A TRAGIC HAPPENING.

Auckland, February 19. A fatal firs occurred in the city tonight, when.the top story of the Thames Hotel was completely destroyed, the second story partly burned, and the remainder of the, building damaged by water. The flames burned fiercely, and subsequently, an elderly man was found 6uffocated in one of, the bedrooms. Four ?toeri|ersons who , were staying: at the hotel were in bed at the time of the fire, 'and had narrow escapes., -A returned soldier, P. N. Jones aud ffis wife, were awakened by falling jlnss. Mrs. Jones collapsed, and was carried by her, hjisband through tho flames to thq street .entrance., Jones was badly burned about one foot. "Mrs. -Jones suf. fered from shock'and-slight burns. .'Tivo', others, Jlr.T'ahd ,Hrs. J. C. Jerrard. of Rangirirj. escaped bv the fire escape in their night attire. These people lost everything, as also did several guests in the hotel who were attending amuse, ment houses.
_The building is owned by the Dilworth Trustees, leased to Campbell, Ehrenfried and Company, and sub-leased to the licensee, O'Connor. The insurances are unavailable,, and the identity of tho victim is not yet known.
