CALEDONIAN SOCIETY
■ A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The gay tartans of kilted Scots and tho skirl of bagpipes at the Town Hall Concert Chamber last night betokened the inaugural social gathering of tho newly-formed Wellington Caledonian Society. There was a very large attendance of members and their friends, and an excellent evening's entertainment was provided- The -proceedings wero of a free-and-easy nature;'being enlivened by Scottish songs, dancing, and instrumental items. One of the most interesting events of the social was a pipe selection by Mr. J. M'Donnld. Mr. M'Donald is engineer on an oversea vessel at present visiting Wellington, and holds the distinction of being the champion amateur piper 'of Scotland. Ho made a great "hit" with his performance last night, and was insistently oncored. During tho eveiling, songs were tendered pleasingly by Misses siavryer and Ramsbottom,- and Mis* M'Latchie sang admirably in n character item. A duet by the two Messrs. Lyden was much enjoyed, as were the musical contributions of Messrs. Graham and Crump. Tho society's dancers, .Misses Grant, Barton, Bisset't (2), Barns, Campbell (2), and Master Willie Brown, were seen in several exhibitions of national dancing that evoked much enthusiasm.. Messrs. H. Clark i and J. Grant acted as M.C.'s, Mr. W. I Corbett being stage manager,.. Altogether,. | tho gathering was thoroughly sucoessful, | and reflected great credit cn tho orgnni- ! eation of Mr. W. M'Pliee, -the society's ! secretary. '
