SCHOLARSHIP-HOLDERS IN KHAKI
o ' DISCUSSION AT UNIVERSITY ' SENATE.
By Telestraph-Presß Association Christchurch, February 18. At the meeting of the .University Senate yesterday an application was received from a senior scholar in the Exppdition.arv force, asking that his. scholarship should be tenable at,a British university. • ■ ■ - , Mr. von Jlaast moved that the application be granted, basini: the authority to do this on the University Act of 1916.
Tho Chancellor pointed out that the Act only allowed a student to defer the matter of taking advantage of a scholarshin on his retlirn to New Zealand.
Mr. von Hnast, however, contended that wider nowers were conferred. If the Senate lind nower to defer scholarship? it could also do what he suggested. The Chancellor: "If we ngree to this-it would be unfair to others." The Rev. A. Cameron said it should be apnlied to others. The Chancellor: "If you carry this-tno-tion you negative the provision* nf your own >totute." He added that the scholarship were intended to apply only to educational facil'ties in our own universitv college. He 'warned members ajrnhist passin? the motion. The Rev. Mr. Cameron moved as an amendment that in the case in question, and in all other, casp.s of a like nature, the Senate.agrees, to allow a new scholarship , of equal value to the scholar concerned. Professor Hunter said that the scholarphili!! were intended to berefit •■the scholar, and not-the colleges of the.Dominion.
Mr. von Haast ?oid that the amendment .was onlv a device to get round a defect that did not exist-. '¥e csnsidered that new conditions had arisen since the armistice, and it would be unfair to rob students of a chance to advantage of studying , at famous English, universities. He amended his motion to rpjd that the scholarship be naid, and that the student , . be permitted to take up work at a. Home university.
The.'amendment was lost, and the motion was carried. .
