THEFT FROM AN HOTEL
' BAEMAID' ASSAULTED. The theft of "Ms. id. in cash from tho cash register of the private bar at tho Anchor Hotel, in Queen Street, was perpetrated by a young man shortly after closing time (6 p.m.). on Friday (states tho Auckland "Star". The day's takings had fortunately been removed some few minutes prior to the occurrence, otherwise the intruder might have considerably augmented his gains. The register to which he gained -access is on a slielf behind the counter. The man must have entered the building during the barmaid's absence from the bar, for, ■when she returned after an interval of a few minutes, in which she had placed /the proceeds of tho day's sale of cigarettes in the office, the map was confronted by her, crouching behind the'counter in the bar. He immediately raised him-' «lf, and, striking the youtg woman a blow on the right shoulder, escaped from the building, via a door leading into the, backyard, and thence put into a road that gives .access at one end to Market Entrance and at tho other, end to Wellesloy Street. Attracted, by the young woman's'screams, the staff came to Jier assistance, but too late to be of any use in capturing tho man.
