The Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, M.L.C., went to Canterbury at the end of last week to take part in the Presbyterian jubilee celebrations at Leeston.
Mr. H. D. Robertson, hon. secretary to the British Red Cross League, • proposes leaving for a trip to Great Britain, accompanied by Mrs. Robertson. They hope also to visit France and Belgium before returning to Auckland.
Mr. P. G. Morgan, director of the New Zealand Geological Survey, after attending the Science Congress, .inspected oilboring operations, at Chertsey. 'He intends making a geological trip up the Eakaia Gorge, and will visit Otago before returning to Wellington.
Mr. J, M'Donald, of the Dominion Museum staff, and secretary of the NewZealand Academy of Fiue Arts, .lias been appointed assistant censor of kinematograpk films. This appointment has been iliade in order to give some measure of relief to the censor (Mr, Wm. Joliffe), who has been finding' the work rather too much for him.
Mr. Frank Young (formerly of Moncrieff and Young, ironmongers), who returned from the war a few weeks ago, has been appointed warehouse manager for John Duthie and Co., vice Mr. A. Rigg, deceased.
Amongst those who returned to Wellington last week from the war zone was Lieutenant-Colonel J. H. Whyte, D.5.0., D.C.M,, N.Z.S.C, who commanded the Wellington Mounted/. Hides Regiment in the Sinai-Palestine. : campaign. Colonel Whyte, when war broke out, was, brigade-major to the Wellington Mounted Rifles Brigade, being stationed at Palmerston North, and proceeded with the Main Body to Egypt. He fought throughout the Gallipoli and 'Sinai-Palestine campaign?, and for his distinguished services was given, command of the Wellington Regiment in the famous Anzac Mounted Division. He was awarded the D.S.O. in 1915, and in 1917 received a bar to the distinction. Ho returns to New Zealand with the reputation of being a brilliant leader in the field who was well loved by his men. Colonel Whyte also fought throughout the South African Wnv (1899-1902). in which he won his D.C.M.
The Rev. R. S, Gray has received private cable advice that Captain R. N. Gray left England on February 1 on a troopship. He expects to reach /New Zealand early in March.
Mr. H. B. Bower, who has been in charge of the Christehurch district office of the Labour Department for four years and a half, and has been transferred to a similar position. in Wellington, will leave Christehurch this evening. Mr. W. Slaughter has taken charge of the Christchurch office.
Amongst the candidates who received degrees at Edinburgh University in December la?t were:—Dr. T. A. MucGibbon, M.8., Ch.B., who has been awarded the* M.D. -(in absentia) for a thesis, "Some Observations on Tonsils"; Mr. James M'M. Cole (Auckland), and Mr. Edward G. Joseph (Otago), who receive the M.H., Ch.B. Mr.- 1 Cole (Onehu.nga) went from Auckland University in the beginning of 1917, having been twice rejected for active service. He is doing some hospital work in the United Kingdom before returning to New Zealand. Mr. Joseph served in the Otago Mounted Eifles at the Dardanelles, and is now resident surgeon in Sheffield Infirmary. |
