The third meeting of .Desert Gold and 'Gloaming was awaited with the, keenest Interest, as both the other meetings had been unsatisfactory. To-day's race proved a splendid struggle between the pair, and it was won by Mr.G. D. Greenwood's

champion in a style which admitted of no doubt as to his superiority, though Mr. Lowry's famous mare put up a great battle against her younger rival.

Paraoa and Simple Sam were scratched for the first event. Crown Pearl was made a better favourite than Sweet Tipperary. The latter made the Tunning to the bend for home, where she struck a hurdle, losing several lengths. Speedwell Mac then took command. Sweet Tipperary made a big effort to overtake Speedwell Mac, but the latter won by a length and a' half. The favourite was fourth. ■Messrs. Sfotteryand Lile were fined .£lO for late scratching of Paraoa. All the acceptors started in the Waimato Handicap, 80-Peep arrying slightly more money that Waimatao. It was a good betting race. Inah made the running to the straight from Waimatao, Royal Chef, and Husliman. Half-way down the straight Waimatao took command, and went on to win nicely. Tirana was fourth, and Hnshman was last.

The big field of fourteen contested the Farmers' Plate. Lord Nelson was installed favourite, but he had to ba contentwith second place. The winner turned up in White Ranger, who beat the favourite by a neck."

There were only four starters in the Atkinson Memorial Stakes, but it provided a fine race, the winner turning up in the outsider of the party, Marqueteur, a'fte.r a splendid battle over the last two furlongs, up , to which point Killard made the running. Robur had her nose in front a hundred yards from the post, but Marqueteur just got home in the last stride. Eighteen lined up in the Maiden Scurry. Cotillion, with Gray in the saddle, was the papular pick. Vance also'was solidly supported. Th& latter jumped out very smartly, and at the end of the first furlong had three lengths' advantage over Jutland. Vance was first into the straight, but Jutland liad too much pace in the .run home, and won by two lengths, paying a good price. The winner is a full brother to Postillion and Square Deal.

Birkenvale was the only .one to oppose Desert Gold and Gloaming in the Hawera Stakes. The crowd silently watched Gloaming enter the birdcage, but when Desert Gold appeared she was loudly cheered. Applause was also bestowed, on Birkenvale. .The two cracks were very evenly backed, Desert Gold carrying £U more than Gloaming. ■ Birkenvale was neglected. A splendid starbwas effected. Desert Gold was on. the inside, and Gloaming in the centre. The three-year-*>ld was the quickest to gather up pace*, and at the first bend, one hundred and fifty yaixls from the start, had'taken the rails. Desert Gold drew up to within half a length when racing round the bend, and so they raced along tne back. Tlireo •furlongs from home Gray, made his effort, and the mare drew level with her rival amidst great excitement. When heads were turned for home Gloaming had again drawn to the. front, and coming away eventually won all out by a length and a half. Birkenvale was nearly a hundred yards away. It was true run race, gallantly won by the better of the pair on the day. It was pleasing to .see that the public recognised this fact, and loudly cheered Gloaming and Deeley as they returned to the enclosure. Needless to my, Desert Gold also was given an ovation. ;

Colonel' Paul was scratched .for the liiaha Hack Handicap, for which Hallow finished- up-a slightly . fetter favourite than Tiranga, Metallum was. most fancied of the others. Hallow led into the. straight, and looked all over a, winner, but Some Boy came with a great run on the outside, and- won bv a head. First Salute was fourth, All the acceptors, except Hyginas and Eobur, were saddled "P f °r. the concluding event,'for which Alteration- was made a better favmirite than Loyal Arch. Bingham and Kiltessalso, were well supported. Trombone. wJio was always prominent, won a i>ood race by a neck-from Bjndiam. Paddineton Green just beat Kiltess for third money.. . DUNEDIN ACCEPTANCES.
