THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS
Sir,—The above senilis to bo a very knotty question, especially as the President of the United States takes such a dictatorial stand. The late Mr. Roosevelt ■ and several, Senators did not seem to approve of his autocratic dictation. Although a Democrat, he seems, Sir, to endoavour to make Britain and the other Great Powers look so small by the continual application of his gi's*t Fourteen Points. His uttitudo towards Germany makes one almost inclined to bolieve that there is some family connection with Germany. Of course ho would like the colonics returned if possible to tho German people, and would like cotton and such like to be sent to Germany, whilst the French factories are reduced to vulgar frasdons by tho thioving Huns. Now, Sir, why was it that it took that academic gentleman about three years to make up his mind to come to tho assistance of Franco and Belgium? And when ho docs come—or, rather, was pushed—he desires to rule tho roost, and is so anxious to get an armistice fixed up when two or threo weeks more would have allowed Marshal Foch to have brought the wily Ifun to his knees. Now it seems as if tho whole peace arrangement will collapse if etriugent measures are not soon taken. President Wilson must not bo allowed.to keep pandering' to the Germans. Dr. Solf rather likes President Wilson's way and keeps plying
him for concessions, whilst that blustelV ing Hiiidoub.urff keeps increasing liifl army, and the more so as he sees th# Allies demobilising. Apart from all this, there seems a strange infatuation as regards America. President Wilson wants the "United States Fleet as great as Britain's. It may ibe jealousy; it' t-o, it may cause a bitterness. Could not Britain police the seas, and the combined nations pool up to support it, and so reduce the naval expenditure of the world? Let us hope, Sir, that the statesmen of the threat Powers may take a firm stand and cease demobilising whilst things look so precarious.—l am, etc., HENRY WALTON. Waikanue, February 11, 1919.
